I'm hanging out in Minot at the hotel waiting for the fog to lift enough to get our inbound back in the air and on its way. We're the outbound crew and our plane is currently sitting in Fargo waiting for visibility to come up high enough to land here. That gives me time to ponder for you!
I'm actually looking forward to the uniform conversion tomorrow. It'll be nice to break out the new Delta Airlines uniforms designed by Richard Tyler. Just a side note here, it is evidently illegal and punishable by a lifetime of Minot layovers to not mention Richard Tyler every time "Delta uniforms" is uttered.
I've actually put some pictures of me in my new Delta Uniforms by Richard Tyler up on my Facebook page. I was kinda surprised that I looked ok in my double breasted coat. I figured that I'd look like a small African elephant in it but it doesn't make me look any fatter than anything else does.
We're bracing for another winter storm in Minneapolis on Monday night and into Tuesday. The weather service is saying that we'll see a minimum of six inches and that the totals could go higher in certain places. That will be April 1st..what an April Fools joke by Mother Nature.
I joined a kickball league for the summer. It is a bunch of WVU grads getting together and attempting to form a team. We seem to be lacking enough locals with WVU connections though so we'll have to take some WVU hangers-on to make the roster work. I'm looking forward to it and it should be a great way to network and make some new friends.
Rumor has it that we're going to go to the airport shortly so I should run..I doubt it'll be worth the effort though.
A little bit of this and a little bit of that makes the world go 'round. Bringing you the interesting, the bizarre and the funny since 2008! We're heavy on airline news and information (my work), West Virginia and West Virginia University (my home state and my alma mater) and all the things I find funny (because, after all, it's my blog).

Northwest management wastes good will (what's left of it) and money over purple ribbons
Northwest Airlines management has announced that they will tell flight attendants to remove the optional purple ribbon portion of our newly designed union insignia. We have asserted that we believe the contract language is clear and that we are contractually entitled to wear our “union insignia” -- in whatever form we decide to fashion it. Of course, we have handled this minor contractual dispute over a small purple ribbon through the normal grievance process, and not by calling the airport police, as management did last week in Detroit.
-From the Association of Flight Attendants
Northwest management is working hard to impress their new masters in Atlanta as they set out to do everything that they can to make sure that flight attendants have no say in their future and are left without representation in the new "Premier Global Airline". The reality is that managements petty actions prove to the work group the exact reasons we need a union.
I'd like to take a second and personally thank the inflight managers that are making this their mission as they continue to motivate the work force to take steps ensuring our future organizing success!

More Pics from Cambodia
Here are some more pictures of my recent trip to Cambodia. These aren't as fun as the first pictures I posted and I should warn you that some of them are actually disturbing (or should be). These are pictures from The Killing Fields and from the Tuol Sleng Detention Center (also known as S21), some are captioned, some are self explanatory. I have included some explanation below (thanks to Wikipedia) for a quick bit of history.
The Killing Fields
The Killing Fields were a number of sites in Cambodia where large numbers of people were killed and buried by the totalitarian communist Khmer Rouge regime, during its rule of the country from 1975 to 1979.
At least 200,000 people were executed by the Khmer Rouge (while estimates of the total number of deaths resulting from Khmer Rouge policies, including disease and starvation, range from 1.4 to 2.2 million out of a population of around 7 million). In 1979 Vietnam invaded and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime, which was officially called Democratic Kampuchea.
Tuol Sleng Detention Center
From 1975 to 1979, an estimated 17,000 people were imprisoned at Tuol Sleng (some estimates suggest a number as high as 20,000, though the real number is unknown). At any one time, the prison held between 1,000-1,500 prisoners. They were repeatedly tortured and coerced into naming family members and close associates, who were in turn arrested, tortured and killed. In the early months of S-21's existence, most of the victims were from the previous Lon Nol regime and included soldiers, government officials, as well as academics, doctors, teachers, students, factory workers, monks, engineers, etc. Later, the party leadership's paranoia turned on its own ranks and purges throughout the country saw thousands of party activists and their families brought to Tuol Sleng and liquidated. Those arrested included some of the highest ranking communist politicians such as Khoy Thoun, Vorn Vet and Hu Nim. Although the official reason for their arrest was "espionage," these men may have been viewed by Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot as potential leaders of a coup against him. Prisoners' families were often brought en masse to be interrogated and later murdered at the Choeung Ek extermination centre.
Even though the vast majority of the victims were Cambodian, foreigners were also imprisoned, including Vietnamese, Laotians, Indians, Pakistanis, Britons, Americans, New Zealanders and Australians.
Most non-Cambodians had been evacuated or expelled from the country and those who remained were seen as a security risk. A number of Western prisoners passed through S-21 between April 1976 and December 1978. Mostly these were picked up at sea by Khmer Rouge patrol boats. They included four Americans, three French, two Australians, a Briton and a New Zealander. One of the last prisoners to die was American Michael Scott Deeds, who was captured with his friend Chris De Lance while sailing from Singapore to Hawaii.
In 1979, the prison was uncovered by the invading Vietnamese army. In 1980, the prison was reopened as a historical museum memorializing the actions of the Khmer Rouge regime.
The Khmer Rouge
The Khmer Rouge is remembered mainly for the many deaths of an estimated 1.5 million people or 1/5 of the country's total population(estimates range from 850,000 to two million) under its regime, through execution, torture, starvation and forced labor. Following their leader Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge imposed an extreme form of social engineering on Cambodian society — a radical form of agrarian communism where the whole population had to work in collective farms or forced labor projects. In terms of the number of people killed as a proportion of the population (est. 7.5 million people, as of 1975), it was one of the most lethal regimes of the 20th century.
Khmer Rouge wanted to eliminate anyone suspected of "involvement in free-market activities". Suspected capitalists encompassed professionals and almost everyone with an education, many urban dwellers, and people with connections to foreign governments. Khmer Rouge believed parents were tainted with capitalism. Consequently, children were separated from parents and brainwashed to socialism as well as taught torture methods with animals. Children were a "dictatorial instrument of the party" and were given leadership in torture and executions.
One of their mottos, in reference to the New People, was: "To keep you is no benefit. To destroy you is no loss." The ideology of the Khmer Rouge evolved over time. In the early days, it was an orthodox communist party and looked to the Vietnamese Communists for guidance. It became more Stalinist and anti-intellectual when groups of students who had been studying in France returned to Cambodia. The students, including future party leader Pol Pot, had been heavily influenced by the example of the French Communist Party (PCF). After 1960, the Khmer Rouge developed its own unique political ideas. For example, contrary to most Marxist doctrine, the Khmer Rouge considered the farmers in the countryside to be the proletariat and the true representatives of the working class, a form of Maoism which brought them onto the PRC side of the Sino-Soviet Split. By the 1970s, the ideology of the Khmer Rouge combined its own ideas with the anti-colonialist ideas of the PCF, which its leaders had acquired during their education in French universities in the 1950s. The Khmer Rouge leaders were also privately very resentful of what they saw as the arrogant attitude of the Vietnamese, and were determined to establish a form of communism very different from the Vietnamese model and also from other Communist countries, including China.
After four years of rule, the Khmer Rouge regime was removed from power in 1979 as a result of an invasion by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and was replaced by moderate, pro-Vietnamese Communists. It survived into the 1990s as a resistance movement operating in western Cambodia from bases in Thailand. In 1996, following a peace agreement, their leader Pol Pot formally dissolved the organization. Pol Pot died on 15 April, 1998, having never been put on trial.

Some reality in what Barack Obama is advocating.
This comes from the White House website, not from Rush Limbaugh or the others out there that can bend the truth better than the average joe. Here are a list of tax CUTS the Obama administration advocates.
Obama’s Comprehensive Tax Policy Plan for America will:
* Cut taxes for 95 percent of workers and their families with a tax cut of $500 for workers or $1,000 for working couples.
* Provide generous tax cuts for low- and middle-income seniors, homeowners, the uninsured, and families sending a child to college or looking to save and accumulate wealth.
* Eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses, cut corporate taxes for firms that invest and create jobs in the United States, and provide tax credits to reduce the cost of healthcare and to reward investments in innovation.
* Dramatically simplify taxes by consolidating existing tax credits, eliminating the need for millions of senior citizens to file tax forms, and enabling as many as 40 million middle-class Americans to do their own taxes in less than five minutes without an accountant.
Under the Obama-Biden Plan:
* Middle class families will see their taxes cut -- and no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase. The typical middle class family will receive well over $1,000 in tax relief under the Obama-Biden plan, and will pay tax rates that are 20 percent lower than they faced under President Reagan.
* Families making more than $250,000 will pay either the same or lower tax rates than they paid in the 1990s. Obama will ask the wealthiest two percent of families to give back a portion of the tax cuts they have received over the past eight years to ensure we are restoring fairness and returning to fiscal responsibility. But no family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 1990s.
* The Obama-Biden plan will cut taxes overall, reducing revenues to below the levels that prevailed under Ronald Reagan (less than 18.2 percent of GDP). The plan is a net tax cut -- his tax relief for middle class families is larger than the revenue raised by his tax changes for families over $250,000. Coupled with his commitment to cut unnecessary spending, Obama will pay for this tax relief while bringing down the budget deficit.
