Reviewing Week One of College Football

Well, obviously the biggest story of the week and what will be one of the biggest stories of the year happened in Ann Arbor yesterday as David slay Goliath. Any football fan worth his/her weight knows that Appalachian State was going to the Big House simply to pick up a paycheck. Someone forgot to tell the Mountaineers. Check out the video of the ending of the game. It was PANDALERIUM! The other side of the coin, for Michigan, this is quite possibly the worst season opening loss in the history of the program. Lloyd Carr admitted that his team was not prepared for the game and that he was to blame. Those words will come back to haunt him as the expectations in Ann Arbor were sky high this year. If Carr struggles through the rest of this season there will be a coaching change for the Wolverines next year. Carr might be done even if he goes 10-2, losing only to Appy State and Ohio State.

Other "Hot Seat" Coaches after week one.

We've established that the seat just got REALLY hot on Lloyd Carr but several other coaches didn't do anything to stop the rumors that are starting to swirl around them.

1-Greg Robinson (Syracuse)-Wow...this is a team that actually looks like it spent the off-season getting worse. Washington, a program that is working to rebuild itself, looked like national title contenders as the Orange looked inept (again) in the Carrier Dome
2-Sylvester Croom (Missississississippi State) Croom faces an interesting issue. He has one of the toughest defenses in the SEC but the other side of the ball is aptly named...it is offensive. The Bulldogs worked all spring, summer and fall trying to find an offense. The results were not encouraging. The 'dogs only managed 5 first downs while having SIX interceptions and losing one of three fumbles. Croom might want to start looking for a real estate agent if this keeps up.
3-Al Groh. Groh left the J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS! in hopes to right the fortunes of his alma mater at the University of Virginia. Losing to Wyoming isn't the way to do it.

5 Storylines from week 1-

1-I-94 is NOT the place to see great football. Interstate 94 runs through the heart of lower Michigan right through Ypsilanti (Eastern Michigan), Ann Arbor (University of Michigan) and Kalamazoo (Western Michigan)
2-Charlie Weiss (Coach at Notre Dame) is as overrated as he is oversized.
3-Virginia Tech has offensive problems
4-West Virginia opponents must be cursing aloud today as they look at a highlight reel of the offense. WVU easily threw the ball yesterday which bodes well for the continued development of the offense. Add impressive debuts by both Jock Sanders and Noel Devine in the backfield and (for this week only) the OTHER Mountaineers might make good on Steve Slaton's wish to "average 50 points" this year.
5-West Virginia might have to bring the basketball scoreboard over from the Coliseum for the WVU-Louisville game in November

Big East Week 1

The Big East was 7-1 in its first week with only Syracuse losing. USF struggled to get past Elon in a game that I thought would be a blowout, Lets hope the Bulls were looking forward to Auburn next week. Jim Leavitt will not be happy in practice heading into Auburn for a matchup with the Tigers Saturday. UConn got a "must" in the win column with a 45-14 win over the woeful Duke Blue Devils. It started off rough for the Huskies who actually trailed for a period Saturday. Pitt beat Eastern Michigan, West Virginia beat Western Michigan, Rutgers beat Buffalo and Louisville beat Murray State. No big surprises here as all the favorites won and won comfortably.

Some Highlights from Week 1 In Morgantown

Hope you enjoy! I'll try to get some Week 2 previews up later this week! I'll be IN Oklahoma for the OU-Miami game this Saturday...pics and more coming up soon!
